I think this is awful~the False Creek North Shore walkway

I was interested in the recent discussion regarding an extension of Vancouver's waterfront walkway system along the Point Grey waterfront. I think the Park Board was wise in deferring the matter since as evidenced by these photos taken of the original North Shore False Creek walkway, the city either doesn't have the money, or the inclination to maintain what we already have.  And please don't tell me this is being done in the name of sustainability!

I realize this many not be an isolated example. But it is an eyesore and I'm told the merchants and residents in the area have repeatedly asked the Park Board to undertake some basic maintenance to keep the area tidy, to no avail. So let's hope the Park Board staff do the right thing and arrange for the area to be weeded and tidied up. I refuse to believe they can't find find some solution to the problem.

But in case there isn't enough creativity amongst Park Board Commissioners and Staff, may I suggest two ideas.  Organize a program like that seen along US highways where certain businesses or organizations 'adopt' a stretch of the road and keep it tidy, with appropriate recognition.  Alternatively, organize some volunteer days when residents are encouraged to come out with their gardening implements and do some weeding and cleaning up. Reward them with coffee and donuts, or whatever!

We should all be ashamed of this co

Couldn't agree more - there are examples everywhere of public areas the city is not maintaining. Someone should set up a "shame" website where people could post pictures of the worst examples. Then maybe the city would be embarassed into doing the maintenance. These areas also set a bad example for new residents of the city - if the city doesn't maintain its properties why should they?

This walkway built in 1986 will be torn out soon, so maintaining anything in this area is probably a low priority.

the owner of the property fronting this should be ashamed. Maintain the city property and enjoy lower taxes and less government.

The casino guys don't care, they are a terrible tenant for this site. The entire area is falling apart.

Thank you to Janet Brown of CKNW who picked up on this story and helped bring attention to the need for improved maintenance of numerous areas around the city.

I would note that the weeds are now gone. That being said, I still think consideration needs to be given to other initiatives to help maintain the city and engender greater civic pride...

Since we already pay our municpal taxes to maintain our city, the adopt program means some people are paying twice--with their money and their time. In my neighbourhood groups of people have started to mantain pathways neglected by the Park Board and it has actually meant more interaction between neighbours. This is a good thing. However I think if groups or individuals are going to maintain land that should be done by the City, their expenses should be covered. While donating their time and effort is noble and worthy, equipment, and plants don't come free.

I just heard Raymond Louie on CKNW ... pathetic. He obviously does not walk on the seawall very often. It doesn't matter if its on the north side or the south side of False Creek, the weeds are everywhere. Some are 3 feet tall.

Usually Councillor Louie is articulate and has reasonable answers (although you may disagree with him). In this case he is way off base when his only response is that the opposition is playing "politics" and that whenever he is asked a direct question he always says "to the best of my knowledge". Don't you think you should have checked into it before you went on the radio?

Hello! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about walkways in your area. I am glad to stop by your site and know more about walkways. Keep it up! This is a good read. I will be looking forward to visit your page again and for your other posts as well.
In US English, a walkway is a composite or umbrella term for all engineered surfaces or structures which support the use of trails. These include sidewalks, footbridges, stiles, stairs, ramps, paseos or tunnels. Walkways can also be used by passengers to board or disembark from an aircraft to the terminal building.
