Mark the Date: November 14

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS!
On Saturday November 14, from 8:30 until 12:30,
I have always liked to celebrate anniversaries, even unhappy events like the receivership of my former employer. Saturday November 14 will be another anniversary...one year since the last election. While it too was a somewhat unhappy day, I thought it should be commemorated.

I am therefore pleased to promote an event that has been organized with my friends Gordon Price and Bob Ransford. Three panels of Vancouver thought leaders will review and discuss the highlights of the past year on the Vancouver Municipal Scene. The event will take place at the SFU Wosk Centre for Dialogue.

Presenters will include Gordon Price, Bob Ransford, ThinkCity's James Fletcher, Peter Ladner, and John Tylee of the Vancouver Economic Development Commission. We will review achievements in housing, planning and development, as well as the city's proposed Green Capital initiative and budgetary issues. The morning will wrap up with commentary from some of the city's most thoughtful, and yes sometimes outspoken pundits including Frances Bula, Monte Paulson, CityCaucus.com and Jonathan Ross of Civicscene.ca.

Coffee and Muffins at 8. More details to follow. I hope you will join us.

ps. And thanks James Basnett for creating the event poster. You're a very talented guy. And quick too!

I agree. I have therefore invited both Jonathan Ross and Jim Green. I'm hoping they will attend

Jim Green is a paid real estate consultant and Jonathan Ross is hack, pundit wannabe, whom you have invited through sheer naivete; that he will bring anything to the table other than partisanship is well past doubtful. He is a mark for Vision and is an untalented writer of dubious qualifications.

I had to cancel on you, and I'm truly sorry for this, but you have badly soiled this affair with the invitation to Ross, who has zero credibility. The Green invitation only furthers the problem.

There are lots of credible people from the left. Neither of the aforementioned fall into that category.

Besides, you have already stated how you think Vision has delivered. Is this not enough?

While this began as an NPA flavoured event, as the plans developed, more and more people urged me to make it more inclusive, fearing that it would be just a Vision bashing. That was never my intention and this prompted my effort to invite others. Peter Ladner is there as a former NPA Mayoral Candidate. Jim Green was a former Vision Mayoral Candidate. We don't always agree, but he'll bring a valuable perspective.

Mike Klassen writes a popular blog CityCaucus.com. Jonathan Ross writes a popular blog CivicScene.com. I am looking forward to both their contributions. Both are far more partisan than me, but it will be interesting to see if they cancel each other out!

I am sorry A.G.Tsakumis is not able to participate. While we don't always agrees with what the other says or does, I think he is a very clever and colourful commentator. I would have liked him to be there.

While I'm upset to read that he feels I have 'soiled' this affair, it is my hope that everyone who attends will feel that it was a thoughtful and worthwhile event and a suitable commemoration of what happened a year ago.
